The History Behind This Site
I decided to build this site partly because of my love for the sport of downhill skiing and partly because computer science is my major and I enjoy working with computers.
FAQ
Here are some common questions posed by beginning skiers.
Q: I'm going skiing next weekend with some friends. Although I've never skied before, my friends have been expert skiers for years. Is it really necessary for me to take a lesson?
A: Absolutely. Many of the deaths and injuries associated with skiing are a direct result of skiers pushing their limits. The purpose of a beginning ski lesson is to establish physical and mental limits for the skier. A skier who is unaware of his mental and physical limits is a danger to himself and a danger to his fellow skiers.
Q: I'm interested in taking a skiing vacation, when would be the best time for me to go?
A: During the midweek is nearly always the best time to head to your local ski area. First of all, midweek crowds are much smaller, which makes it easier for the skier to concentrate on skiing, instead of concentrating on avoiding collisions with other skiers. Secondly, prices are usually lower during the midweek, so you'll have more cash to spend at the bar ;)
Q: I'm thinking about buying some new equipment, but I'm not sure what brands and what features to look for. What would you recommend?
A: As far as skis go, I personally prefer K2's because of their versatility and good construction. K2 makes great skis for skiers of all levels and skiing styles. However, with the latest advances in ski design, it's almost impossible to get a BAD pair of skis. One of the biggest innovations in ski technology is the use of the new "hourglass" or "shaped ski" design, which makes initiating turns easier. It's also a big help when you're learning how to carve. Concerning ski boots, I have always felt that Tecnica makes the best overall boots on the market. Their fit and performance are exceptional and they're especially comfortable for skiers like myself who have wide feet. I've always felt that the hype surrounding binding technology and features is nothing more than hype, however, many of the professional racers seem to favor Marker bindings
Q: I have a child who's interested in skiing. What age is a good time to introduce children to the sport?
A: Although many ski areas accept children as young as three for ski lessons, the average child below the age of 7 doesn't have the necessary motor skills to ski. Unless your child has shown exceptional balance and coordination in a sport such as ice skating, don't take him to the slopes
until he is at least six years old.
Q: Should I tip my ski instructor after a lesson?
A: Tipping a ski instructor should be the same as tipping a waiter at a resturant. If the instructor was helpful and friendly and you feel that you made progress or at least had fun, you should tip him or her well. A ski instructor who is enthusiastic about sharing his love of skiing with you deserves a liberal tip. On the other hand, if the instructor wasn't very helpful, was rude or didn't show any concern for your safety and well-being, then there is no need to tip him or her.
